Why choose dodgeball?

Current challenge in schools

Engaging children in physical activity both in and out of school is becoming increasingly more difficult. Latest figures show that almost 1/4 of reception children are overweight. This figure is even higher for year 6 children, where 1/3 are overweight. These statistics are extremely high for such a young age, showing that there is a current challenge of getting children to play sports regularly.

More traditional sports are finding it difficult to ACTIVELY engage the majority of children in their PE lessons, as well as outside of school. This is because they often only use 1 ball and involve a limited skill set. This means that in a class of around 30 pupils, there is often a large group who aren't involved at all. In addition to this, the limited skill sets in these sports can put children off playing if they aren't as good as others.

Dodgeball perfectly resolves this issue, as there are multiple balls in play, as well as a wide range of skill sets.

  • Having at least 3 balls in play at any time means that ALL pupils will have to be engaged and concentrating throughout. They could be going up to throw a ball, getting ready to make a catch or even just being aware of other balls in order to dodge.
  • Children can excel at different areas (throwing, catching, dodging and teamwork), meaning those children who are often more reserved in PE lessons, can show their strengths and enjoy playing sport.

Popularity of dodgeball

Dodgeball is very quickly becoming one of the most popular sports across the world, especially in the UK. Sport Englands 'Active lives survey' ranked dodgeball as the 2nd most highly participated sport in schools. Recent figures show that 613,000 children play dodgeball at least once a fortnight.

With participation numbers constantly increasing, now is the time to introduce dodgeball to your school with high quality coaches. A recent report from Ofsted shows that dodgeball is also the most in-demand sport for primary schools. The report showed that 33% of primary children said they wanted more dodgeball , compared to only 30% wanting more football.

Why dodgeball is great for schools

  1. Dodgeball is one of the best sports, if not the best, for developing physical literacy at all ages. Because there is more than 1 ball, there are more opportunities to learn and develop object control and co-ordination skills. The wide range of skills involved in dodgeball mean that players are improving all motor skills (throwing, catching, running, jumping) as well as co-ordination, balance, spatial awareness and teamwork.
  2. Children without a ball aren't stood still waiting to be passed to. They will have to maintain awareness in order to actively dodge . But what if they are out? Dodgeball is really easy to adapt, meaning players can come in from a catch, or even just joining the other team or doing star jumps.
  3. Played using the right equipment and rules, dodgeball is perfect for PE lessons. It is safe (no physical contact), fun and boosts children communication and teamwork skills. Our coaches are fully qualified from British Dodgeball.
